Building Resilience in our Students

9 May 2017

Every Learner
Every Day
Every Way...

Building wellbeing and resilience in our students and building community connectedness are the key elements of Open Access College Strategic Plan.

In support of developing our own and our students' resilience and wellbeing staff are participating in a two-day training program in positive psychology called PERMA + hosted by the SA Health and Medical Research Institute.

The SAHMRI Wellbeing and Resilience Centre incorporates Dr Martin Seligman's PERMA dashboard (Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning and Accomplishment) PLUS, Physical Activity, Nutrition, Sleep and Optimism, to measure and build wellbeing.

PERMA+ carries within its framework concepts for individual action to build wellbeing. More information about PERMA + and SAHMRI can be found here: http://www.wellbeingandresilience.com/perma-plus-1/

We are also surveying a group of 200 students this term to gauge the wellbeing and resilience of students across all levels of schooling at OAC. The survey identifies young people’s strengths, hopefulness, incidence of anxiety and depression - and the relationship of these to protective behaviours, as identified by students.

The survey is conducted by Resilient Youth Australia, and once completed we are provided with a report, as well as support in identifying actions that will improve the wellbeing and resilience of the young people in our school community.
